Inhalation and injection anesthetics are used for anesthesia and in emergency and intensive care medicine.

The available anesthetics have different properties. They can be combined with each other and with other drug classes such as muscle relaxants and MOR agonists in order to obtain optimal anesthesia for each patient.

Inhalation anesthetics modulate membrane properties globally. Modern inhalation anesthetics possess good controllability.

Nitrous oxide possesses low potency and good analgesia.

Sevoflurane possesses high potency, a good hypnotic effect, and does not irritate mucosal membranes. Desflurane is a standard inhalation anesthetic but is not suitable for induction of anesthesia.

For this purpose, thiopental is broadly used in uncomplicated cases.

In anesthesia, midazolam is often applied because of its sedative-hypnotic and anxiolytic effects. Ketamine is used because of its dissociative-anesthetic effects. Propofol is widely applied and has a good sedative-hypnotic but no analgesic effect.
