The operating room is a dynamic and complex environment; critical events can happen without warning.
When critical events occur, the anesthesiologist must lead an nterprofessional team whose members have varying levels of training while simultaneously caring for a critically ill patient.
At any time, one or more factors, including patient comorbidity, procedural, or equipment challenges, may combine and lead to a crisis that threatens the patient’s well-being or life.
Anesthesiologists must be able to identify, understand, and manage the rapidly changing patient and situation while leading the team. The anesthesiologist must manage this complex and challenging situation often while the crisis is evolving and without having complete information.
Crisis resource management (CRM) is a paradigm adapted from other
high-hazard fields that provides necessary tools to help the anesthesiologist and the team manage the critically ill patient.
