Editor—Some reports have shown that Taylor's approach to spinal anaesthesia can be successfully performed in patients with normal or abnormal spine anatomy, even after failures at other intervertebral spaces. However, the dose of local anaesthetic that should be administered in spinal anaesthesia using Taylor's approach is not known.
We conducted a single-centre, sequential-randomised trial to estimate the minimum effective dose (MED) of plain bupivacaine 0.5% for ultrasound-guided spinal anaesthesia using Taylor's approach to achieve a sensory block to the level of T10 or above in 90% of patients [minimum effective dose of plain bupivacaine 0.5% in 90% of patients (MED 90)].
The study was approved by the local ethics committee (number TJ-IRB20190312) and registered (NCT03899038).
